Your autumn wardrobe: how to dress for changing weather

Autumn is rarely predictable. The morning can be cold and clear, the afternoon wet and windy. That is why a good autumn wardrobe is less about individual styles and more about clothes you can combine and adapt to the day.

Here is what we think is worth having ready when the temperature drops.

Start with layers

The smartest thing you can do in autumn is dress in layers. A T-shirt or thin long-sleeve top underneath, a shirt, sweatshirt or knit in the middle, and a jacket on top. That way you can take a layer off when you get inside and put it back on when you head out.

Layers also help when you need room in the fit. When each layer fits properly, the overall look stays calm and tidy, with nothing feeling tight.

The jacket does the heavy lifting

If you only invest in one thing this autumn, make it the jacket. It should handle both rain and wind and still be comfortable to wear all day.

Look for:

  • A hood or high collar to keep the wind out
  • Pockets placed where they are easy to use
  • Good freedom of movement across the shoulders and arms, even with an extra layer underneath

A rain jacket is a good choice for wet days, while a slightly heavier jacket takes over when it gets colder.

Knits and sweatshirts for the mid-layer

The mid-layer is where the warmth is. A knit or sweatshirt works on its own on milder days and under your jacket when the wind picks up. Choose a fit that gives you room without being too long or too wide, so you can wear it both at work and on your days off.

Trousers built for everyday life

Autumn trousers need to do a bit more than summer ones. Jeans are the obvious choice: they are hard-wearing, go with most things and only get better with time. Choose a fit that sits well at the waist and gives you room to move.

Think about the details

It is often the small things that make the difference between a cold autumn day and a good one:

  • A scarf or beanie for cold mornings
  • Socks that keep your feet warm
  • Shoes or boots with good grip for wet pavements

Fit comes first

Whatever you choose, start with the fit. Clothes that fit look better and last longer, because they are not pulled and worn in the wrong places. At NORTH LATITUDE, we make clothes for big and tall men, so you never have to compromise on comfort or style.

Ready for autumn

A good autumn wardrobe does not have to be big. With a solid jacket, a couple of good mid-layers and trousers you can rely on, you are ready for most of what the season brings.
